Hired BrightNest Painting (John Ricker) for kitchen + bathroom. Paid $1,815 deposit. He unilaterally canceled the start date, applied heavy knockdown texture instead of agreed “fine orange peel,” then refused to fix it, falsely claiming removal would ruin drywall. We removed it ourselves in <1 hour with sponges—no damage. Fired him for cause 11/15 and offered fair pay for his 2 days + materials. Their reply: keep the entire $1,815, refused to provide receipts, threaten to sue us for full $6,050 + lost profits. Formal demand 11/20 ignored. Equipment returned 11/21. Forced to filed Texas AG complaint, BBB, and will file small claims. Advice: require signed sample board, daily inspections, receipts the moment you pay any deposit, and photograph everything. Avoid BrightNest.
